Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
