Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
