The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
